The thing about Christmas is that there isn't enough time to get everything you want to get AND deal with shipping time.
I have never been as organized as I am this year in terms of getting presents off my list. Almost too organized because the planning has meant that I've had to skip some really good "spontaneous" purchases for folks. Nonetheless, with the exception of Operation: Reflector* for kirilaw, the plans have fallen into place with one exception (sis-in-law). I was even far enough ahead to have most of Kirilaw's not-insufficiently sized family's gifts sent down with her mom and dad two weeks ago.
And yet I'm still under the gun.
The Christmas letter is not yet written and the cards are not yet in the mail as a result. Worse, I count two of three giftos for Kirilaw that have yet to arrive, which is driving me crazy because they both confirmed they shipped at least as far back as December 7.
They better be here today. Or it's a paper holiday.
*Operation: Reflector is where I tried to get Kirilaw a swanky new point-and-shoot camera for the holidays, only to fall down because I'd already spent too much to get her a really good one, and thus I am forced to rely on the old coupon strategy to ensure she gets the one she wants. **And before you ask, she's aware of her present, so I'm not breaking any secrets in advance. |

Oh my yes. I never understood the appeal of the iPod until we got one. I was too cheap to upgrade when they first came out because the portable CD players did the trick for going to the gym. Eventually, we bought a laptop and an iPod came with (I'm sure Apple was just clearing out the old ones to make room for the new ones, but I don't care about being on the cutting edge of technology, so it was fine by me/us). We suddenly could carry tons of music with us: to the gym, in the car (thanks to a cassette adaptor), everywhere. We later discovered Podcasts of our favorite NPR shows (the Sunday Morning Puzzler, Wait/Wait/Don't Tell Me, PHC LWBGDays, ...) and those are so entertaining to listen to on long rides to visit our friends on the other side of the bay.
Eventually, we acquired a Nano and a Shuffle and love them both. My Shuffle comes with the gym. It's so tiny, but still holds enough music for a workout and I can even stow an audio book on there! |

| Rolando |
[Dec. 15th, 2009|01:04 am] |
Beth and I went out this evening to brave St. Laurent in search of final Christmas gifts. We had great success - for her brother, for my brother and for my second-cousins (yes, it's going to be a very Transformed Christmas...)
And I came home with Rolando.
Backing up for a minute. I've been thinking about sponsoring a child for some time now and have done some preliminary investigation. But I never actually got to the actual sponsoring stage because of outstanding concerns I had about the various organizations involved. Then tonight, at the mall, was a World Vision kiosk and they mostly settled my concerns.
Of course I was pretty much putty with Rolando staring out at me. He's five, a little younger than my nephew and a little older than my niece. He lives in Mozambique, he's not yet in school and he helps his family by sweeping. I haven't met him yet, but I'll be writing him my first letter this week and sending him off a small toy for Christmas. I'm thinking a 15" DC Animated John Stewart Green Lantern or perhaps a GoGoGobot. The temptation to spoil him is terrible, but I am resolved to do this right. But one things for sure...
I'm in it for the long haul. |

Everything is everywhere. We still have some junk at the old house (not counting dust bunnies). And today, when Hubby was going to clear out the rest of the old junk? It's POURING and BLOWING rain. Yay.
Ok, off to get dressed and go to work, where things are so busy still it's not even funny. And I have to say goodbye to my awesome graduate assistant. *sobs* |
